Classical ARTS Atelier
Welcome to CAA!
Classical Arts Atelier was created to give teens and young adults the technical skills needed to create realistic drawings and paintings through consecutive skill-based lessons similar to those used in the 19th century at a French Atelier.
What is an atelier?
“Atelier” is simply the French word for “studio.” It is a place where European artists would train during the 19th century in order to master realistic drawing and painting skills. Today, the term “atelier” refers to specialty art schools that use skills-based, historical techniques to create representational art. Some people refer to this method of teaching as the "atelier method." As students advance in skill level, they will notice an increase in accuracy (proportion, line, and form) when creating representational art.
Why study "atelier methods?"
An atelier uses classical methods to teach drawing and painting. These historically established training techniques were studied by Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and John Singer Sargent. This method of teaching art is different than the more expressive art education taught in most art schools today and was forgotten about for most of the 20th century. However, these skill-based lessons perfectly complement today's more expressive education as students gain skills in accuracy and attention to detail.
How does an after-school atelier work?
When attending a session, your instructor will break down complex drawing skills by using an easy-to-understand step-by-step method that allows students to progress even if they have no drawing or painting experience. You may make your own schedule (once or twice a week) or try a drop-in class.
Where and when do I attend class?
Classes are currently held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15-4:45 at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. You are welcome to attend as little or as much as you like. If you would like to request a different time or day, please email info@caa-philly.com or text 267-754-2421.
